Playland

Overview

Athol Fugard’s Playland, translated into Afrikaans by Saartjie Botha and directed by Albert Maritz, opened in the Studio Theatre on the 23rd of January 2014. The production starred Albert Pretorius and Mbulelo Grootboom and was performed in Afrikaans with English surtitles.

It is New Year’s Eve in 1990 when Gideon le Roux, a slightly drunk ex-national serviceman, meets Martinus Zoeloe at a fairground in the country. Martinus is the security guard at the fair and an ex-Swapo fighter. His dark secrets were securely locked away, or at least this is what he thought. Playland was presented by The Fugard In association with the Suidoostefees.
