About the Fugard
The Fugard Theatre was located in District 6 and honored the history and memory of that vibrant community that was so savagely uprooted during the apartheid era.
Athol Fugard is South Africa’s most significant and internationally acclaimed playwright. His soul-searing plays have moved audiences in South Africa and around the world.
The Fugard Theatre was made up of five historic warehouse buildings, situated on half a city block in District Six, Cape Town which are owned by the District Six Museum.
Comprising a 325-seat theatre, 120 seat studio theatre, foyer, bar, rooftop and rehearsal rooms, The Fugard Theatre played host to theatre, music, events and conferences.
Over its ten years of operation, The Fugard Theatre produced and presented over 180 productions and events as well screening as over 250 cinema titles.
The Fugard Theatre was renowned for its bar-raising social media and online engagement, creating clear channels for audiences to engage with The Fugard and its productions.
The Fugard Theatre was a regular feature during the annual theatre awards seasons in both Cape Town and Johannesburg and won multiple at the prestigious Fleur Du Cap and Naledi Theatre Awards.
The Fugard bar was known as one of the most hospitable and enjoyable theatre bars in Cape Town, synonymous with world class service and its selection of food and beverages.
