The Space: Theatre of Survival

Overview

The Fugard Theatre Bioscope was proud to host a preview screening of the documentary The Space: Theatre of Survival on May 20 2019, before it screened at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival in Cape Town in June.

This documentary feature traces the return of photographer Brian Astbury as he travels to Cape Town to remember the first fully inclusive racial arts venue in South Africa – a place he established at the height of the apartheid struggle.

Reviews

The Space: Theatre of Survival is a necessary record of a time. It places theatre at the heart of change. It remembers and honours those who made it and were born of it. The only thing that is missing from the film is enough theatre. “
