“Master Harold”…and the Boys

Overview

As part of the celebration of the Fugard Theatres’ 10th birthday, a brand new production of “Master Harold”… and the boys was staged and directed by Artistic Director Greg Karvellas and played in the Studio Theatre. This award-winning production starred Desmond Dube, Siya Mayola and Kai Luke Brummer. Sadly, due to the covid 19 Pandemic, this production’s season was cut short. Set in a tea room in Port Elizabeth on a dreary, wet afternoon in 1950, “Master Harold”…and the boys is a poignant coming of age story and exploration of a friendship between a young white boy (Hally) and the two adult black men he has grown up around (Sam and Willy), against the backdrop of the oppressive, divisive apartheid laws of the time.

Directed by Artistic Director Greg Karvellas and starring Kai Luke Brummer, Desmond Dube, and Siya Mayola, this still relevant text, played to critical acclaim and sold-out houses. Its run was cut short by the Covid 19 pandemic and shuttering of theatres in South Africa.
