Story

The Fugard Theatre’s South African premiere of Joshua Harmon’s Broadway hit Significant Other.

From the writer of the West End smash hit comedy Bad Jews, which enjoyed sold out runs in Johannesburg and Cape Town, comes a Fugard Theatre production of Joshua Harmon’s Broadway success Significant Other.

Eric Abraham presents a Fugard Theatre production and South African premiere of Significant Other. The play opens on 30 May in the Fugard Theatre and is directed by the Fugard Theatre’s resident director Greg Karvellas (The Road to Mecca, Shakespeare in Love, The Father, Clybourne Park, Bad Jews, CHAMP).

Jordan Berman is desperately looking for Mr Right… but he is getting it all wrong.

The New York Times hailed Significant Other as one of its Top Ten Productions of 2015, with critic Charles Isherwood commenting ‘an absolutely wonderful new play. Entirely delightful, richly funny and heart-stirring’.

Other high praise includes ‘…bittersweet comic delight…See it, and bring a date if you can. You’ll want a hand to hold’ (Time Out), ‘strikes the perfect balance between comedy and pathos — with the emphasis on comedy’ (Variety) and ‘hilarious and poignant, delivering a relatable contemporary take on the old-fashioned theme of waiting with increasing impatience for Mr. Right’ (Hollywood Reporter).

Significant Other follows Jordan and his three closest friends as they navigate love, friendship and New York in their twenty-something years. Jordan is single, and finding Mr. Right is much easier said than done. While surrounding himself with his close group of girlfriends, it comes to pass that the only thing harder than looking for love is supporting the loved ones around him as they pair off and embark on their journey of marriage.

The all South African cast features Gabriel Meltz (Murdering Agatha Christie, Somber Pines) as Jordan, Dominique Maher (The Rocky Horror Show, Pride and Prejudice) as Kiki, Lesoko Seabe (Clybourne Park, Siembamba) as Vanessa, Lucy Tops (Funny Girl, The Rocky Horror Show) as Laura, Michèle Maxwell (Cabaret, Present Laughter, Funny Girl) as Helene with Roberto Kyle (Aunty Merle the Musical, Knapsekêrels) and Ryan de Villiers (Measure Up, Outlander) completing the line-up.

Set Design and Lighting Design is by Wolf Britz (Die Seemeeu; Wie's Bang vir Virginia Woolf?), Costume Design by Widaad Albertus (The Demon Bride, The Eulogists) and Sound Design is by the Fugard Theatre’s Resident Musical Director Charl-Johan Lingenfelder (King Kong, West Side Story).

“Joshua Harmon once again uses his razor sharp wit and eagled eyed observation to bring us another hilarious, poignant and sensitive story about something we can all relate to – the journey of finding love and how we react when our friends around us find it first,”says Daniel Galloway, the Executive Director of the Fugard Theatre. “We are proud to be presenting another South African premiere of this exceptional playwright’s work, brought to the stage by an all-South African cast and creative team.”

Media comments about the overseas production have included

‘Strikes the perfect balance between comedy and pathos — with the emphasis on comedy…the wonder of his humor is that, while it reflects a youthful sensibility, his clever jokes appeal to all ages.’- Marilyn Stasio, Variety

‘Hilarious and poignant, delivering a relatable contemporary take on the old-fashioned theme of waiting with increasing impatience for Mr. Right…From the tart comedy of the early scenes, peppered with smart one-liners, droll pop-culture references and savvy social observations, to the emotionally piercing later developments, Significant Other is consistently pleasurable, funny-sad entertainment that represents a strong follow-up for Harmon to his widely produced earlier hit, Bad Jews.’– David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter

Significant Other is both a good night out — a show ideal for a Friday night with pals after a few drinks — and a quite sophisticated exploration of the complex and changing dynamic between gay men and the women who love them. A black comedy about a painful transition that hits many of us urbanites in our late 20s or early 30s and goes a long way toward explaining why weddings can be such fraught affairs for anyone stuck in a tux or matching crinoline– Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

Please note: Significant Other has an age restriction of 16.
