Die Kaptein se Tier

Die Kaptein se Tier

Story

Die Kaptein se Tier will welcome Owen Sejake back on the Fugard Theatre’s stage as Donkeyman, a Swahili crew member of the SS Graigaur, the ship on which the play is set. Mannie Manim, Executive Director of the Fugard Theatre, was responsible for the lighting of the original 1995 play and will again be the lighting designer in 2011. Neels van Jaarsveldt (Binnelanders, Known Gods, Backstage etc.) and Erica Wessels (Erfsondes, Madame & Eve, Vallei van Sluiers etc.) are cast as The Tiger (the author as a young man) and Betty. Graham Weir will play The Author.

Die Kaptein se Tieris the story of a young sailor (played by van Jaarsveldt) who begins to pen his first novel onboard the SS Graigaur with the help of his muse – a picture of his mother (played by Wessels) – and his friend, the ship’s mechanic (Sejake). The play is said to be one of Fugard’s most personal, and is an autobiographical reflection of his attempts to come to terms with conflicting emotions over memories of his brave mother and flawed father.

Reviews

“Our greatest playwright – and The Captain’s Tiger leaves you in no doubt that Fugard still deserves that accolade – has now allowed himself the luxury of opening his autobiographical treasure chest,” - Paul Bookkooi
“The Captain’s Tiger is probably one of the most atmospheric dramas that Fugard has written, and certainly the most playful,” - Barry Hough
