Story

The Fugard Theatre Bioscope’s 2015 & 2016 World Arts Cinema Season is the Fugard Theatre Bioscope’s latest offering of screenings. For the fifth consecutive year the Fugard Theatre Bioscope partners with The Royal Opera House, The Royal Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet, as well as Great Britain's National Theatre bringing Cape Town audiences the very finest in theatre, opera and ballet from some of the world’s most famous stages. Screenings will be presented in full digital high-definition and surround-sound in the comfort of the Fugard Theatre. This season will welcome additional Special Cinematic titles too.

The 2015 & 2016 season commences with an exclusive screening of Fabergé: A Life of Its Own on Sunday, 27 September 2015 at 11am. This special cinematic event, from new Fugard Theatre Bioscope Partners Arts Alliance Media, reveals the fascinating story of one of the most prestigious names in luxury  and will give audiences unprecedented access to the fascinating and prestigious world of the Fabergé Egg.

Highlights for this season include the eagerly awaited National Theatre productions of Hamlet, starring Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch on Sunday 10 January 2016, and Man And Superman with Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes on Sunday 18 October 2015. This seasons audiences can also look forward to a festive season screening of The Bolshoi Ballet’s glorious The Nutcracker on 20 December 2015 commemorating Tchaikovsky’s 175th Anniversary, as well as the Royal Ballet’s performance of Frankenstein, which will complete The Fugard Theatre Bioscope 2015 & 206 World Arts Cinema Season on 3 July, next year.

Due to overwhelming public demand, audiences will get one more chance to catch a screening of the Oscar Winner for Best Foreign Language Film 2014, Ida. The Polish film, which was produced by Eric Abraham, the owner and founding producer of the Fugard Theatre, will be screened on Sunday 11 October 2015. The Fugard Theatre Bioscope is proud to be the only cinema venue in South Africa licensed to screen Ida. Eric’s first Academy award-winning film – the Czech language Kolya, which won the Best Foreign Language Oscar for 1996, will also be screened as part of this season on the same day as Ida, making for a double feature of Oscar winning foreign language films. Kolya will be screened at 1pm on Sunday 11 October 2015 immediately after Ida.

Over and above the rich offering of world theatre, opera, ballet and Oscar winning films, audiences and music lovers can also look forward to 3 special music cinema events namely Eric Clapton: Live at The Royal Albert Hall, The Who: Live in Hyde Park and the highly anticipated Grammy Award-winning band Arcade Fire's first feature film; The Reflektor Tapes.
