Popular Jazz songstress, Amanda Tiffin and internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Shannon Mowday joined forces for the first time for two concerts in Cape Town.

The collaboration was born out of many a conversation between the two Cape Town jazz women who share common experiences in a very male-dominated genre. The idea to join forces was the result of a particularly intense discussion on a plane back from Grahamstown last year. “We had been lamenting the difficulties and complexities of finding the right combination of musical abilities and personalities in one’s band, when Shannon suggested we try collaborating, using favourite musicians from each of our various spheres,” said Tiffin.

Mowday, who was the Standard Bank Young Artists Award winner for Jazz in 2007, is one of the most diverse and sought after performers and recording artists to have emerged out of South Africa. She has been living in Norway for the past couple of years, studying towards her Masters Degree, and working extensively with musicians there. She draws from many influences with seemingly boundless energy and brings it together with purpose and style. Many music critics have applauded her gift of blending jazz with an eclectic mix of African rhythms and folklore. Her music expresses the difficulties and growth of her homeland with a totally honest and fresh approach which is difficult to put in any one genre.

Tiffin is no stranger to Cape Town audiences. She was recently seen with quirky a cappella group Not the Midnight Mass in their show Hot Cross Nuns, which received rave reviews. She has also become a firm favourite with Jazz lovers, both locally and abroad and has been a regular feature on the jazz club circuit in Japan over the last few years.

The two guests from Norway and Sweden are members of Mowday’s current trio. Bass player and composer, Putte Johander lives on the most western situated island in Sweden, "Nordkoster", close to the Norwegian border. He has collaborated with musicians from all over the world and has a great interest in African music, playing in projects with musicians from South Africa, Mali, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. He also runs his own record label, Parallel.

Erik Nylander is a sought-after drummer in Europe. He was born in Sweden and moved to Norway to study, and is now based in Oslo where he works as a freelance musician for several international projects, including Mowday’s trio.

The Bolshoi’s grandiose epic Spartacus recounts the story of a Roman slave’s fight for freedom. With its famous Khachaturian score, since the 1960s it has been considered one of the greatest ballets in the Bolshoi repertoire. The choreography by Yuri Grigorovich fills the Bolshoi stage with dynamic scenes of tension and conflict, and gives full expression to the virility and strength for which Russia’s male dancers are renowned.

Kom vier saam.

  • Dates

    28 Jan 2014 - 02 Feb 2014

Suidoosterfees is blowing into The Fugard again from 28th January – 2nd February with even more productions to look forward to. In this third year of co-operation, patrons can look forward to a variety of shows to suit every mood and interest.

Start off by being dazzled by Hair, the iconic Sixties musical, performed by the students of Northlink College’s Drama department. Or why not try Larry Joe Live – you must have heard of him before: he recorded his debut album in Douglas prison, combining elements of soul, Afro pop and R&B.

Of course the main course is provided by Athol Fugard. This year’s production is Playland, translated by Saartjie Botha and under the direction of Albert Maritz. It’s New Year’s Eve when Gideon le Roux (Albert Pretorius)-bottle in hand- meets Martinus Zoeloe (Mbulelo Grootboom) at a funfair. Martinus is the security guard and an ex-Swapo fighter, having spent 15 years in jail for murder. An allegoric portrayal of South Africa when two sides of a bloody war meet.

Another premiere to look forward to is Beauty Queen – an Afrikaans translation of Martin McDonagh’s Beauty Queen of Leenane. A family drama with a dark twist! We all know her warm, sexy voice. Now, for the first time, Sarah Theron will share the stage with the fabulous Gugulethu Tenors to create a musical production that combines her passion and nostalgia with the Tenors’ unique sound. Something old, something new and sung in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.

Now for something ‘sweet’: Platform 9 Deel 2 picks up where Platform 9 ends, immediately after it’s run at the Baxter.  The train to Park Station is leaving, Lovey – who dreams of becoming a ballerina- the pregnant Brenda and Uncle Omie have their seats. Do you?

Travelling even further, Titanik is the hilarious story of Boeta Durrie’s antics to get hold of a possible inheritance that went down with the HMS Titanic. You’ll be laughing from the minute DHL rings his doorbell all the way to Southampton!

The battle between white and black swan unfolds with savage grace in Swan Lake. Tchaikovsky’s haunting music traces the steps of prima ballerina Mariya Aleksandrova as she dances both Odette and Odile in this definitive production from the Bolshoi Ballet; also featuring Nikolay Tsisakaridze as Rothbart.
Ballet in two acts and four scenes After the scenario by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltser

"... it was particularly gratifying to catch Ruslan Skvortsov in the Bolshoi’s broadcast ......The Bolshoi’s Mariya Aleksandrova, on film, danced the role quite differently: handsomely but unchangingly caught between fear and hope." - Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times

From the Bolshoi Ballet. Screened as part of the 2014 & 2015 World Cinema Season

At the palace, the royal family and their guests are gathered for Prince Siegfried’s birthday celebrations. In a majestic ceremony, Siegfried is made a knight; young girls try to attract his attention, as he must choose a wife during the ball. Overcome by the sudden awareness of his future responsibilities, he escapes into the night and meets a strange flock of swans by a magical lake.

White swan by day, human by night, the beautiful Odette awaits an oath of true love to break the curse. The great legend of the enigmatic swan/woman is one of the most romantic classical ballets, appropriately set in the era of courtly romance and characterised by elegance, style and harmony.

With Tchaikovsky’s famous, lyrical score, Swan Lake depicts the tragic love between Princess Odette and Prince Siegfried, performed to perfection by the unparalleled virtuosity of Russia’s great Bolshoi Ballet. This universal and enchanting masterpiece of love, deception and drama is a must.

At moonlight on the banks of a mysterious lake, Prince Siegfried meets the bewitched swan-woman Odette. Completely spellbound by her beauty, he swears his faithfulness to her. However, the Prince realizes too late that Fate has another plan for him ...

A ballet of ultimate beauty and a score of unparalleled perfection born at the Bolshoi in 1877. In the dual role of white swan Odette and her rival black swan Odile, prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova exudes both vulnerability and cunning through superb technical mastery, alongside the powerful and emotional Siegfried, Denis Rodkin.  Including breathtaking scenes with the Bolshoi’s corps de ballet, this is classical ballet at its finest.

Part of The National Live Theatre Season 2013/2014

Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience, screened as part of The Fugard Bioscope's National Theatre Live 2013/2014 Season.

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses.

The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive.

From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister.

The Audience reunites writer Peter Morgan and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren following their collaboration on the critically-acclaimed movie sensation The Queen.

The Audience is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and presented in the West End by Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries.
